Commit To Care - Critical Insights into Caring for Loved Ones with Alzheimer's

Deciding to be a caregiver for a loved one battling Alzheimer's disease can be one of the most challenging tasks you can undertake. But with strength, commitment and love, you can make a tremendous difference in the life of your loved one as they go through the stages of this complex disease.

Bonnie McGovern took on the role of caring for her sister Barbara when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. As a child, she watched her mother care for her father who had been stricken with polio. As an adult, she emulated her mother's love and compassion when she took on the role of caregiver to her sister. Now, as an author, Bonnie is able to share many of the lessons she has learned with others.

If you are considering being a caregiver for a loved one suffering from Alzheimer's there are a number of things you can do to make the journey better for your loved one and for yourself:

Life doesn't end with the diagnosis: Don't treat your loved on as if their life is over. Be sure to find ways to enjoy the time you have and help them to make their days joyful despite their illness.

Adjust your behavior as circumstances arise: Many illnesses, specifically Alzheimer's have many stages. Be prepared for changes and deterioration in the health of your loved one. While it can be very difficult, accept that it's part of the process and make your best effort to adjust and adapt.

Be positive: A positive attitude goes a long way. Not only will your positivism have a beneficial affect on your loved one but it will make the journey better for you as well.

Put yourself in their shoes: Alzheimer's is a debilitating disease. People who were once very independent suddenly can't handle some of life's most simple day-to-day tasks. As a caregiver, take this into consideration. By considering what it would be like to have the disease and no longer be able to lead your life as you're accustomed to can help you be more patient. It will also make the day-to-day roadblocks that you face less frustrating.

Be a friend: Many patients are in denial. Sometimes one of the best things you can do for a loved one is to be a friend and assist them without making their disabilities so apparent.

Do your homework: If you face a roadblock, research ways to overcome the hurdles. Whether it's by attending support groups, scouring the internet, or reading books and magazines, look for ways to make your journey and the journey of your loved one easier and less stressful.

Maintain a safe environment: As the disease progresses, even everyday activities such as boiling water can be dangerous. Look for ways to make sure that the home is a safe environment to prevent accidents. Also make the environment simple so that your loved one doesn't become easily confused in the environment.

Make them happy: At times you'll simply have to do what makes your loved one happy - even if it doesn't make sense. Being a caregiver is often a lesson in tolerance.

Remain calm: Often bouts of paranoia, especially in public, can be quite taxing. The erratic behavior of your loved one can be frantic and frightening. Try to remain calm and in control of the situation.

Take walks: Taking long walks with Alzheimer's patients has been very helpful in decreasing the chance that they will wander away.

Exert your power: Be sure to have a power of attorney and a medical power of attorney so that you can make decisions affecting the health of your loved one and manage their affairs when they become unable to do so.

Take time for yourself: If you're taking care of your loved one in your home, enlist help so that you can have time for yourself. It's important that you preserve yourself and your health so that you can be there for your loved one when it really matters most.

Let go of your guilt: If there comes a time when you can no longer be the primary caregiver for your loved one, don't beat yourself up or become overwrought with guilt. It's okay to admit that you need help, or that you're simply not capable of providing 24 hour care for your loved one.

Choosing to be a caregiver for a loved with Alzheimer's disease is one of the greatest tributes to their lives you can make. By utilizing these tips and tools, you can make a tremendous difference and ease the stresses and challenges you face on this difficult journey.

Personal Injury Settlement Amounts

Personal injury settlement amounts provide the claimed amount to the plaintiff that has filed in the court for a personal injury. The amount depends on how much damage has resulted from the injury. The amount that the injured person would get is determined when the insurance companys adjuster and the attorney try to predict what the jury would offer from the claim.

The amount of the claim is also determined by factors like the injury damage and the loss occurred during the personal injury. It also considers what the witness would make in the court along with the damage that has happened. Then the attorney and the insurance adjuster would make an agreement with the client to fix up the approximate personal injury settlement amount. A personal injury attorney knows exactly the worth of the case with his prior experience in dealing with these types of cases and claims.

The amount from the personal injury settlement would also depend on various factors like the injury severity, the time duration for the treatment, damage done in the amount of permanent tissue, the resulted damage, the amount of work missed, how much pay was lost, how it affected the persons ability and lifestyle, and how much the ability to work is lost. Generally, many cases result in settlement amounts for pain and suffering awards around $900 to $115,000. All the major settlement amounts would be offered depending on these factors that are specified.

Whoever was at fault at the time of injury could also be an important factor in the personal settlement amount. One would be interested to know what kind of settlement amounts they can receive. In general, these amounts can be offered only after the insurance companys adjuster and your attorney each predicts the offer that would be made by the jury. They normally do this after reviewing all the witnesses and the strength of your testimony. Moreover, it is in our interest to get the highest possible amount since the fee is a part of the settlement amount.

What Is "Deepfish" And Why Is It Important To You?

It used to be just Blackberry and the TREO that business professionals used as portable devices which had a mobile phone combined with built in business management tools, such as a web browser, calendar, to do list, e-mail, contact list, etc. The internet connections for these devices were provided by a mobile service provider.

Then came the Smartphone from Microsoft, with the Windows Mobile operating system, with built in Wi-Fi, which allowed you to get internet access wherever wireless internet was present. While the TREO in most cases had the Wi-Fi option available through an added component, it was simply inconvenient or unknown to most users.

Most business users who used the web browser features of these units had several challenges besides the tiny little QWERTY keyboard: The screen was too small to display a regular website, and some of the features such as java scripts, ActiveX, AJAX, and animation such as Flash, were not displayed.

The web designers were asked to optimize the sites so that they would display on the above mentioned devices. It was not only an expensive process, but even after the optimization, the sites still did not show up to the user's liking. In some cases, since changes were needed on the regular website so that they could be made "mobile friendly," they did not look right on a normal desktop.

Microsoft claims to have come up with a solution, which they have called Deepfish. Deepfish is not a new web browser, but a feature which adds functionality. Visit http://labs.live.com/deepfish/videos.asp to see how Deepfish works.

According to Microsoft, Deepfish provides:

  • A familiar look and feel of web pages on mobile as seen on desktop.
  • Bandwidth optimized rendering for faster content delivery.
  • Address bar web navigation.
  • Intuitive zooming, panning and cue map for quick navigation and browsing.
  • Support for simple link navigation and form submission.

  • I believe this is a good start. Keep in mind, Deepfish is early in its development cycle and is a step or two from the beta version. As a result, features such as java scripts, ActiveX, AJAX and animation, such as Flash, are still not supported. I am sure this will be a challenge for other mobile browser providers to come up with a solution of their own.

    Children's Fitness

Remember your physical education (PE) classes in school? If your experience was anything like mine, it was a class you truly hated. And if, like me, you were not a natural athlete, your painful memories may have actually discouraged you from exercising later in life.

A recent New York Times article, Putting the Gym Back in Gym Class (October 13, 2005), explores this problem and examines what some PE professionals have proposed to improve the situation. In part this re-evaluation is due to the sharp curtailment of school PE programs in recent years. As the article explains, School administrators began cutting physical education programs...because of the way many classes were taught. Budget cutters who remembered playing dodge ball and Red Rover came to view gym class as dispensable.

But there is also a genuine understanding that PE has not, for the most part, been successful in promoting health and fitness. Only a tiny percentage of students continue playing the sports they learned in gym class after graduating from high school. (When was the last time you and your friends enjoyed a game of dodge ball?)

And many of the sports emphasized in gym failed to help those who needed it most. As Anne Flannery, the president of PE4life, a PE advocacy group, points out, In dodge ball its the very child that needs exercise the most whos picked off first...in a game of soccer probably four or five of the most athletic kids touched the ball, and everybody else just stood there.

This certainly describes my own PE experience. I quickly learned that if I kept a low profile, and was discreet in minimizing my participation, I could still get by with a grade of B, or at worst a C. During our weekly outdoor runs, I would disappear for a few rounds into a shallow ditch behind a row of hedges, out of sight of the gym teachers. My dodge ball strategy was to pretend I was hit early in the game when there were still enough players in the game that nobody noticed.

Today, there is a growing emphasis on teaching skills that are useful beyond gym class. Instead of learning how to dodge a ball or climb a rope, children in some schools are taught to lift weights, balance their diets and build cardiovascular endurance. There is also a movement towards fewer competitive activities and more activities that emphasize personal achievement such as rock-climbing, kick-boxing and tai-chi. As Ms Flannery says, Its about giving these kids the tools and skill and experience so they can lead a physically active life the rest of their life.

This approach certainly makes a lot of sense. Its usefulness is also backed up by a recent study published in the October 2005 issue of the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine. University of Wisconsin researchers observed 50 overweight children and found that they lost more weight when they cycled, skied cross-country and walked than when they played sports during class time. They also found that sports like football and kick ball produced less overall movement, in part because reluctant students were able to sit on the bench much of the time.

The new approach to PE is certainly to be welcomed as a major improvement over the old system. But if the goal is truly fitness for life, I believe these new developments leave out a crucial ingredient: They fail to train kids HOW to do whatever physical activities they engage in - whether it be sports, or everyday activities like sitting at a desk, standing, walking, driving a car - in a way that minimizes harmful strain and risk of injury.

Promoting cardiovascular fitness is fine as far as it goes, but this kind of grading system has a serious flaw in that it both mirrors and reinforces the preoccupation of most adult fitness programs with the quantity of activity activity performed, rather than the way participants use their bodies while performing those activities. We tend to be interested in how many laps we swam, the amount of weights we lifted, or the speed of our runs rather than how well we used our body in performing those sports. In other words quantity rather than quality.

To see what this leads to, take a look at any group of runners or joggers. You will probably see tight necks, hunched shoulders and painful expressions on many of their faces. These runners may be getting a cardiovascular workout, but in the process theyre putting a lot of unnecessary and harmful pressure on their bodies. No wonder so many people who begin fitness programs drop out after a few weeks, often due to pain or injuries.

Of course its important that children engage in vigorous physical activity; we dont want them to grow up to be couch potatoes. But making effort the primary basis for grading students - even if its as easy as reading a heart monitor - does our children a great disservice.

What makes this particularly sad is that we now know how to help people improve their movement quality. The twentieth century saw the development of numerous somatic therapies and teaching methods that have proven effective in helping people of all ages perform all their activities, from everyday ones like walking and using a computer right through to vigorous sports, with greater ease, efficiency and safety.

The method I know best, first as a student and then, for the past twenty years as a teacher, is the Alexander Technique. It has a long history of helping people with stress-related conditions like back pain and stiff necks and shoulders and it is often used by musicians, dancers and actors to improve the quality of their performance.

The Alexander Technique is taught by specially-trained teachers, but some of its principles could easily be included in PE classes. Take for instance the Alexander-related process that has come to be know as body-mapping. This approach includes learning, on your own body, just where important joints are located and how they function.

It turns out that most of us have serious mis-maps of our own body which cause us to move in ways that attempt to reinforce those incorrect ideas. For example, many people think their hip joints are at waist level when, in fact, they are located far lower on our torso. Correcting this mis-map is quite easy to do and almost always results in much smoother bending, walking and running patterns.

Wouldnt it be wonderful if PE programs included teaching this kind of useful self-knowledge to our kids so they could go through life using their bodies as nature intended? And look back on their PE experiences with fondness and gratitude?

Body-mapping is a term coined by Alexander Technique teachers William and Barbara Conable. You can read a short introduction to the process at http://www.alexandertechnique.com/articles/bodymap

The Conables have written a wonderful book describing the process in detail, How to Learn the Alexander Technique - A Manual for Students. As the title implies, the book was written mainly for people taking Alexander Technique lessons, but I have found it to be a valuable resource for anyone prepared to spend a little time exploring the operation of their own body.

Another book, full of practical suggestions, is Mind and Muscle - An Owners Handbook by Elizabeth Langford. It covers some of the same ground, although she does not use the term body-mapping.

Debt Consolidation Secured Loans Help Those with Bad Credit

A very high percentage of the people in western world have some degree of debt in their lives, and while some seem to manage it well and with no problems, others either find it difficult to manage well, or they have had circumstances come up that has already damaged their credit and may be pushing them toward bankruptcy. If that is the case for you, it would be a good time to give debt consolidation secured loans your serious consideration.

These kinds of bad credit secured loans are specifically designed to people who find that they are in credit trouble and are finding it tough to make the payments on all of their loans each month. This causes additional problems as late fees and over-limit fees start to mount as well, and if the budget was already tight to start with it doesn't take long before they find themselves in real serious trouble and possibly facing bankruptcy.

The primary purpose of debt consolidation secured loans is not to add more debt to the situation, but to ease the problem by replacing a number of small-balance, high-interest credit card and loans with the new debt consolidation loan which typically has better terms and a better interest rate than the existing debts.

The reason the secured loan has better terms is because it is secured against some type of collateral, most likely a house or other type of high value property. This gives the lender some assurance, or security, that the loan will be paid, or in the worse case, that they can recover most of what you borrowed when they liquidate your property.

Most of the accounts you will be paying off with the consolidation loan will be high-interest rate credit cards, so by consolidating you should be able to lower your monthly payment and you will still probably be able to pay off the balance faster because of the difference in the rates, and other fees that the credit card companies are quick to add on to your balance.

Bad credit secured loans are the easiest type of new credit for someone with a low credit score to be able to get because of the collateral, and it is this aspect that also allows you to secure a lower interest rate, even with bad credit, than any other type of loan.

Many people have been able to avoid going into bankruptcy by utilizing a secured loan and paying off the small creditors that have gotten behind, rather than trying to negotiate with them to lower your interest rate or to waive fees.

With debt consolidation secured loans, there is still no absolute guarantee for the lender that the debt will be repaid, especially in the instance of people who are already having financial struggles and their credit problems are showing up on their credit report. Because of these factors, lenders do prefer certain types of collateral more so that other types.

Real estate is the most preferred type of collateral for secured loans because it more often than not goes up in value over time as opposed to depreciating as vehicles do. However, vehicles, such are cars and trucks, are also often used for these kinds of loans as well because they are fairly easy to place a value on them and sell them quickly.

It is best to use the collateral that you have that is of the highest value because the more value you use to secure the loan, compared to the amount you are borrowing, the better the interest rate you will be able to get for debt consolidation secured loans.

A Deeper View on Sexual Harassment

In the United States, around 15,000 cases of sexual harassment are filed in the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) every year. These unruly sex discrimination acts by a higher authority such as the employers are covered by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This law pertains to labor institutions, employment agencies and also the federal government. Its scope covers the employers having fifteen or more workers under his supervision.

Sexual harassment deals with cases involving unwanted sexual moves and sexual favors among others. In the workplace, these acts can be brought to the EEOC for appropriate lawsuit if these put much effect to the employee such as interference in one's work, intimidation, threat, or being engaged in an unpleasant working condition. These harassment incidents have many variations. In fact, it not necessarily means that the victim is always a woman and the aggressor, a man. Same thing as it may occur in cases such that both the victim and the harasser are in the same sex. Most of the times the aggressor has a great authority over the sufferer but there are even occasions that they belong to the same level of work. Moreover, these objectionable acts may come in the form of verbal expressions of sexual desire and not always physical exploitations which may lead to extreme and forcible sexual act.

For a sexual harassment case to gain merits in the court, the accuser must first prove that the sexual violation is unwelcome and in intense cases, the act was done in a violent manner. This means that anyone filing a case suit should be aware that he or she must have informed the assailant, in any way, the he or she is against the person's malicious act. This is quite important because the EEOC examines such accusations in a holistic approach when doing investigative efforts to resolve these issues. They conduct thorough analysis on both party's assertions and other factual information and evidences which have involvement on the case in order to uphold justice.

Nonetheless, it is much better to prevent the occurrence of these incidents in the workplaces. Much to be aware of, employers have the obligation to carry out their duties of providing their workers a safe and amiable place to perform their work and to prevent sexual harassment cases from happening. They, too, should make it clear to their workers that sexual aggression is indeed prohibited in his company by conducting seminars about the topic, setting up an efficient help desk which will hear and resolve the complaints of employees regarding sexual harassment.

The complexities of the law and the intricate court procedure may jeopardize the possibility of obtaining justice. This is why it is still much practical to ask the assistance of a credible labor lawyer to provide support in any legal undertakings such as filing a sexual harassment suit. An expert and steadfast lawyer to handle a victim's case may be more likely to gain favor in the court's resolution of his case.

Kevin Wheatley - Victoria Cross Vietnam

WO II K A Wheatley VC

British Military Medals- Victoria Cross. Highest award for Bravery

Kevin Arthur Wheatley was born the 13th of March, 1937 at Surry Hills, Sidney, Australia to Raymond George and Ivy Sarah Ann Wheatley. Kevin was their third child. Kevin attended Marouba Junction Junior Technical School. He married Edna Davis, a fourteen year old milk bar assistance on July 20th, 1954. Kevin enlisted in the Australian Army on the 12th of June, 1956. Following basic training, he was assigned to the 4th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. He was transferred to the 3rd Battalion the next year.

Kevin served in the Malayan Crises from September, 1957, through July, 1959. In January 1964, he was promoted to Sergeant and then to Warrant Officer II (temp) in August. Kevin was a very well liked and respected non-com. His friends and comrades called him "Dasher", an affectionate nickname given for his rugby abilities. In March 1965, Kevin was assigned to Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV). On the 28th of May, he rescued a little girl about three years old, risking his own life running through a hail of bullets.

Kevin was assigned to a Vietnamese battalion in Quang Tri for about six months until he was transferred to Tra Bong along with five other Australian Warrant Officers in October 1965. At a Special Forces base deep in enemy territory, Kevins group worked along with American forces in leading Vietnam and Montangard soldiers running search and destroy missions.

An operation of the Vietnamese Civil Irregular Defense Force on November the 13th, 1966 in the TraBong valley, approximately 15 km from the Tra Bong Special Forces camp at Quang Ngai province made contact with Viet Cong forces. Accompanying the force were Captain F. Fazekas, senior Australian Adviser, with the centre platoon, and Warrant Officers K.A. Wheatley and R.J. Swanton with the right hand platoon.

At about 1340 hours, Warrant Officer Wheatley reported contact with Viet Cong elements. The Viet Cong resistance increased in strength until finally Warrant Officer Wheatley asked for assistance. Captain Fazekas led his platoon to give assistance, and they fought towards the action area. While moving towards this area he received another radio message from Warrant Officer Wheatley to say that Warrant Officer Swanton had been hit in the chest, and requested an air strike and an evac chopper to evacuate the casualties.

Although told by the Civil Irregular Defense Group medic that Warrant Officer Swanton was dying, Dasher Wheatley refused to abandon him. Discarding his radio so to be able carry Warrant Officer Swanton, under heavy enemy fire, out of the open rice paddies into the somewhat safer wooded area, some 200 meters away. He was assisted by a member of the Civil Irregular Defense Group, Private Dinh Do, who, when the Viet Cong were within ten meters of their position, urged him to leave his dying comrade. Kevin flat out refused, pulling the pins from two grenades to calmly await the Viet Cong, one grenade in each hand.

Shortly afterwards, two grenade explosions were heard, followed by several bursts of fire. The two bodies were found at early the next morning after the fighting had ceased, with Warrant Officer Wheatley lying beside Warrant Officer Swanton. Both had died of gunshot wounds.

Kevin "Dasher" Wheatley was survived by his wife Edna and four children. His body was returned to Australia for burial at Pine Grove Memorial Park, Blacktown, New South Wales. His name is commemorated in the New South Wales Garden of Remembrance at Rookwood war cemetery. In 1967 a trophy for annual competition between the Australian Services Rugby Union and the Sydney Rugby Football Union was inaugurated in his name.

A sports arena at Vung Tau, Vietnam was named after him and his citation and photograph are displayed in the Hall of Heroes, John F. Kennedy Center for Military Assistance, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The United States also awarded him the Silver Star. He was made a Knight of the National Order of the Republic of Vietnam, and received the Military Merit Medal and the Cross of Gallantry.
